Sarez Lake

 Sarez Lake is located in the mountain region Pamir in Tajikistan. Its length is about 55.8 km; the depth is nearly 500 m. The lake was formed because of strong earthquake in 1911, when landslide fell into a deep gorge where flew the river Murghab, so dam with a height 567 metre was formed. Soon the rising level of water flooded the village Sarez, hence the name of the lake.

  According to the scientists, the natural dam, known as Usoy Dam is not stable, as the lake is located in one of the most seismically active regions in the world. At the next earthquake, if the effluent water from the river falls through the narrow valleys of Tajikistan, it will be the horrible threat to neighboring countries. It is important to note that the dam Usoy is the highest among the natural and man-made dams in the world.

  For safety an international project was launched under the management of the World Bank, also the surveillance system was organized in 2004.

  There are more than two thousands lakes on the territory of the Republic of Tajikistan. One of these most beautiful attractions is Lake Sarez.
